How To: Survive Long Ass Flights

I’m not a great flier, I don’t like turbulence and I don’t sleep very well and the food is never great and they are starting to get rid of the seat back TVs and they want you to use your phone or iPad or computer which doesn’t make sense because what if your computer dies? Then you’re stuck on a million hour flight with a rubber chicken dinner and nothing to do.

Now that that’s over with I have come up with a few tips to survive these long ass flights.

Food on flights are always questionable at best. I have been on some airlines where it is surprisingly better than others but you still wonder if you should actually put it in your body in a flying metal tube with such a small bathroom. So, I always pack snacks or nice accouterments to rubber food like an avocado.

You might be thinking you aren’t allowed to take fruits and veggies on planes but you can take it ON a plane, you just cannot take it past customs once you get OFF, so you need to make sure you eat it all or aren’t going to be sad if you have to throw it away.

I always pack an avocado, almonds, date bites, Pop Chips, and cheese cubes. Once you get past security you can grab some drinks, water bottles, gatorade, or orange juice.

I always pack a book I’ve been waiting to read, when you’re trapped and have no where to go but 42 isles back and forth if you are anything like me and don’t read enough, this is the perfect time to start.

Another tip is to get a really good pair of over ear head phones. Think about how your ears feel after an hour with in-ear headphones then multiply it by 10 more hours. I recommend Sudio headphones, they are incredibly soft and they don’t squeeze your head.

Always make sure your computer or iPhone or iPad is fully charged with more than one movie downloaded. Airlines are starting to do away with seat-back TVs which I think is so annoying but they are saying the expense to maintain them is too high in comparison to having wifi on the aircraft, so now we are going to have to hold our phones in front of our faces for hours on end until they fall off. So get a pop socket or something that will help your phone stand up.

Get up and walk the length of the plane every hour. This is a big one, but sitting down for hours on end is never a great thing, so this is the best thing you can do for yourself on a long flight. Do not make the person sitting next to you uncomfortable, stretch while you’re waiting in line for the bathroom.

One of my all time favorite bloggers of female travel The Blonde Abroad actually packs compression socks for long flights, I haven’t tried this one myself yet but I will on my upcoming flight to Australia, 27 hours on a plane is incredibly daunting and I’ll try anything to make it go by easily.

The most important thing to remember is alcohol is free on international flights, so tell your flight attendant to keep the wine flowing, put on your comfy headphones, put on a movie, and set your alarm to get up and move, and enjoy the 10+ hours of no responsibility or cell service.
